My Carbon Footprint: Exploring the Balance Between CO2 and Trees

12/18/2018

(6th grade) Sarrah - 1st place in 2 regional competitions, conservation award, 1st place at state

With a newfound interest in my family's carbon footprint, I was curious to find out whether the trees on my family's property were offsetting our carbon emissions, and which type of trees were most effective at sequestering CO2. I collected information on all the trees on my property and on my family's carbon footprint and determined that approximately 10% of our emissions were being neutralized, and White Pines were the most efficient at sequestering CO2.

I placed 1st in the NCSEF and North Carolina Student Academy of Science (NCSAS) competitions and received a nomination to apply the Pulse of the Planet at the regional competition. At states, I won first place in the NCSAS competition.
